If a board has some delamination on it, is this just a cosmetic issue? Or will the foam absorb water from the ocean?

What type of foam is it Brian? If it's standard polyurethane, keep it dry as it will soak up saltwater like a sponge.
If it's EPS, fughetaboutit, or at least fix it when you have the time. It's closed-cell and will not absorb.

a delam is not a cosmetic issue on any part of the board it is a cancer it is the begining of the end for that board even when repaired propperly . the foam has become soft now you add some nice stiff fiberglass and resin and bam the crack reappers at the seem the next time the board flexs or your foot alpplys pressure consistantly in that area. time for a new stick.

scott nailed it...say goodbye to your friend, delams are very very very rarely worth fixing because of 1)the price most ding repair guys will charge to fix them, and 2)once its fixed, it'll come back bigger and badder really soon.
sorry for the bad news :(

Damn it. All of my boards seem to be plagued by delam... always on the back of the board in the duckdive zone. what can you do to prevent/mitigate it?

all my boards used to do that until I found a guy who knew how to properly glass a surfboard.

What if the delam is on the deck, near the nose, I mean, it seems like a less sensitive area than say lower on the deck.
