It would be great for this (or something like it) to go live, but I don't think investors see a lot of promise in it's development. Not to mention 'wave park' track records (ron jon). It's a huge amnt. of money for a relatively small consumer niche (surfing), commercial use (how theme parks make their money) would likely not be how they'd make their most money. They'd probably have to host tons of WQS events - but the WQS only allows 3 scores (of the best scores) per country the event is in. Maybe get lucky they'd get 1 WCT event. I personally think the money wouldn't be in commercial use of the wave pool for surfers. But creating large 'stadium-seating' for pro-surf events, charging for admission, and collecting from advertising.
Or maybe the $$$ is in building a 'moveable' surf pool. Host the pools in football stadiums. Cost is again an issue here though. - silly
There hasn't even been any video game development for the surfing niche in nearly 10 years. And it's my impression that a surfing video game would have more reach than a localized surf pool (non-surfers would likely make purchases + international distribution - I think there would be a lot of money to be made in the development of a new surf game, but I don't really have the means). I would be suprised if we a surf pool before a new surf video game. A surf pool would be aimed at a VERY VERY narrow market: skilled surfers. They'd also have to put it in a surf heavy zone - coastal. And if they wanted to broaden the market as a general waterpark, they already have competition in California. Not sure about Hawai'i, but that might be a decent location.
Best bet, strike a deal with raging waters / hurricane harbor, build this new thing on their property. Sell them on the media they get for being the 'first' to build a high quality surf pool. & people will travel to come to their park + they can further increase profits by selling surf related stuff.
Obviously though the concern is safety.
Anyways, wave parks just get me excited, long post.

If I had an extra 8 million I would buy one for myself. Forget trying to make money. Just getting barreled for 23 minutes would make it profitable.

Def. agree, if it was me, and I had the $ to build it + maintain it I wouldn't make it public. Surf it myself, maybe host events there.
more betterness

As much as I would LOVE to get shacked for a good 30 minutes I think theres something lost when the power source goes from mother nature to man-made. Surfing is very spiritual for me, and simply being able to "blend" with something that is as purely natural as a wave is an amazing experience.
That being said having access to one of those suckers would do wonders to your skillset.... Lets all chip in a mil or two and share one :D
There is surely enough investor capital here in Santa Barbara to fund one of those things.
Just imagine:
Santa Barbara, home of Rincon, Hammonds, Sandbar, and The Ring...
Fits in well.

I'd rather have Santa Barbara be known as: The place with no waves....

Many people already feel that way...
The least Burton could do is build one for Slates. I mean come on, they built Shawn White a 1 Million dollar private half pipe in a secluded valley at Silverton...why not a $10 M wave pool for the Champ?

Slater's too old. We need one for the Coffin brothers...
