like my fellow forumites in crime, my quiver of boards over the 'years' (troisieme partie someday) has had it's fair share of 'magic carpets' but what i'm trying to suss out here is; what we felt was wrong with the ones that didn't work...?

if a board doesn't 'lock' into trim, im not interested...also if the cutbacks seem forced or un-natural...those two things will kill a board for me!

In my whole life I have been lucky, the only boards that didn't work were Hawaiian guns not shaped by Brewer or Brewer shapers. The Brewer rocker is key to making a Hawaiin gun turn and feel loose. Otherwise early Bradburys, couple of Wildernesses in the late 60s and early 70s, and then 37 years of CIs exclusively shaped by Al, all worked great.

Boards that don't work: Typically involve a board that gets hung up on carves or doesn't drive well. There have been a few. I have one in my quiver right now that should be the ride of my life, but it just doesn't work right. It gets hung up on carves and doesn't quite take off late well. I'm sticking with it for now, as the shaper is working with me to get it right.

As for magic sleds... Right now I've got a few that I love, but one in particular that is just a magic sleigh ride. I love this board, the drive, the flow, the power. It's all wrong when you look at it, but oh so right.

For me its not really about trying to find the right board to fit my style, but trying tons of boards and finding the right way to surf each one. Im pretty sure I could shred just about anything if I surf it for a few days of solid waves. Buying boards and then selling them shortly after doesnt sit well with me. If Im having trouble with a board, I want to find out what it is and surf it better, rather than selling it and buying another. Also, like ryan said, any board that trims well is a magic carpet for me!:D

Not enough scoop in the nose. Too wide a tail. Too much tail rocker. Too soft rails. The rest were just awesome. ;)

no matter how much my ego delves into my id trying to answer my rhetorical question, i still suffer from angst: me or the board...i've chased the measuring tape with some of the finest shapers, test flown in waves of quality and/or consequence but i still keep coming back to what is good and what is right...i am not meant to struggle or force them but when the mind & body & board attachment become ethereal and non existent than the pleasure principle is muy bien...

I continue on the quest for the 'magic' one. The one above came entirely out of the blue, at least to me. It wasn't meant to be a great board; most of the ones we expect to be great are EPS/Resin-X'd now. This one is just a standard pu/pe board. Even the keels were a compromise, as I had meant to make some paddle style fins but got lazy. Ian had the keels available and I said yes. Because of the construction, however, it's dying very quickly. Deck is already crushing in, tail rails are hurting from the pressure, and I stuck it against a rock at the sandbar once. Doh!

As to the Resin-X, it has been a chore & a half lately. I think it's weather related. I just got a Resin-X'd thruster, but I think it'll only be the rare perfected ones that get X'd in future. Here's the newbie, though:

EPS, Resin-X, subtle jet tail (very hard to do on a thruster) single concave with lokbox fin system and 101 Fins bamboozles!

Yea thats been the issue the whole time ive had this board on order... First it was too hot in the summer and then its been too wet all winter... Pretty temperamental stuff apparently

Anyways... New stick looks awesome! Ive only seen super deep jet tails on fishy type boards but I have to say a subtle one looks pretty damn smooth on a thruster!
