They said 10 guys were rescued at Sandspit on Sunday. That's a lot of guys and it looks like Sandspit, esp on a day like Sunday, is a place where only good surfers go. So what is it about Sandspit that makes it so hazardous? What are the dangers there? It doesn't sound like the jetties are the problem because if you are getting body slammed on to the rocks, what the hell is harbor patrol going to do? Beach their boats?

number one, a rogue wave washed over the breakwall and over the berm of sand at the yacht club, knocking people over the guard rails into the rocks and the harbor, and number two, theres a fricken whirlpool at the end of the spit that forms because of weird bottom contour from the dredging projects and because its at the mouth of the harbour. a few guys got sucked from the beach above sandspit right below leadbetter onto the rocks and into the harbor also. when theres waves there the current is really strong...
Here are a couple of images.

I heard the story of some rescues at Miramar if you can believe that. Some idiots were afraid to come in so they paddled out to the sailboat anchored out there and had to be rescued. Heard the Harborpatrol boat almost got caught inside on the biggest set of the day. They got airborne and just made it over. Heard it was pretty out of control. Tustin was out on his Waimea board and didn't get much.

I was at that place on sunday evening. Got some video to post. Wasn't heavy at all. Rincon was going off though. Big sets as the pics here show.
