The Goleta city council moves forward with it’s plan to build on every empty lot in Goleta, including 62 condos at the Bacara!

Subject: Yikes! Goleta City Council Entertains More Pro-Growth or Anti-Environment Amendments Tuesday, March 4, 6 PM

PLEASE NOTE: We're sending you this email because we think you are someone who cares about Goleta. If you'd prefer not to receive such items, please reply and we'll remove you from future such emails.

And if you think this is as important as we do, please forward this email to others who you think might be interested.

Here are 2 rather compelling reasons to attend Goleta’s City Council Meeting this Tuesday, March 4 at 6 PM:

REASON 1: To object to more proposed General Plan amendments requested by developers of Haskells landing. The requested amendments include items such as lowering standards for mitigating impacts of development and lowering environmental standards. You can read about it by clicking on http://tinyurl.com/3xvzkv then click on item C2. More details on this to follow soon.

Bacara, Bishop Ranch and Glen Annie Golf course are waiting in the wings for similar treatment. In fact, most of these changes would apply to all of Goleta. People need to show up and object to these rezones and lowered standards.

REASON 2: To testify at public comment to voice your objection to the majority’s (Bennett, Blois and Onnen) February approval of General Plan amendments to rezone the 14 acre Shelby property, from agricultural zoning to residential. This was in disregard of all the public comment against rezoning Goleta Ag land for more development, as well as in disregard for Goleta Planning Staff recommendations!

If you care about the impacts of more development more traffic, more environmental impacts, more strain on city services and budgets, etc. NOW would be a good time to take some action and tell the Council majority, enough is enough!

If you can't attend this meeting, you can still do something to help:

- email council members (see addresses below)
- forward this note to your friends and neighbors asking them to express their sentiments on the council majority’s urbanization of Goleta
- write letters to newspapers expressing that Goleta is in danger of losing all its ag land while gaining more traffic, more environmental damage and more impacts, just so developers can profit by building housing 95% of us can't afford.

Note that the Council has already approved La Sumida Gardens -200 new units at Patterson and Hollister - and Villages at Los Carneros -275 units at Los Carneros and Highway 101. We should try to see how we deal with what’s already approved before making such massive changes.

If we don't stand for something, we'll have to stand for anything.

Jon the last time I complained about the Surfriders land use rhetoric here you claimed that you were just passing on something you recieved from them. On this Thread the way you set it up it appears you are the author although the language is right out of the Surfriders handbook. I have no real problem with this one, it is basically a call to get involved and that is always good. I have made a career out of being involved in local land use issues and I don't believe that anything said tonight is going to make any difference. I still would prefer we focus on surfing here and leave politics to all the other forums available. For those who care about Goleta growth issues, all these projects pale in comparison to what the University is about to propose for their Long Range Development Plan. I am on the Univerity's mailing list and I received an email yesterday that they are delaying the release, so that they may incorporate plans for their recently acquired Deveroux property. The magnitude of new development about to be proposed by the University on property all within the Coastal Zone, will far more impact surfers than any of the other projects mentioned, combined. If we want to make a difference this is the most important land use project of our era.

Please note: I am not the author of the above post, just the recipent of an email from a fellow lifetime Santa Barbara (in this case Goleta, actually) surfer who asked that I post it. I do believe that this is appropriate material for discussion here as such development will likely have significant impact on the access and environmental stress of our beloved Goleta coastline.

Russell, you are right in that this thread should not be in this particular (surfing) forum, so I will tow it to the "Green Room" (off-topic)...

EDIT: Please too continue to keep us posted as to the developments at UCSB. As I get older I realize that we all have a responsibility to the future generations of Santa Barbarans and particularly surfers as stewards of the environment. I believe that in addition to Surfrider and Heal the Ocean, I'd like to allocate a portion of the resources here to at least provide a forum to discuss relevant topics as a community here. I hope that's o.k. with everyone...

Thanks for your consideration,
--Jon

I went to the last meeting and it was heartening to hear people get up and speak their minds, objecting to the overdevelopment of Goleta.
I've sent my opinions via email in the past and I'll try to attend the meeting again tonight. Hopefully there will be another good turn out.
