Nice video but what he does to the surfer at 1:42 is exactly what we are taking about in another forum. Everyone thinks it's okay for him to snake the other guy and make the other guy fall just because he is soooo gooood. That's ridiculous. He has no respect for the other surfers. What a JERK!

He would get my respect if he did it accidentally, then paddled over and apologized. Otherwise he is just another bully. Let's not idolize surfers because they are good at surfing, let's idolize surfers for the great acts of human kindess they profess.

If he apologizes to the other surfer on this forum he will gain back my respect, otherwise, hasta luego!

Yeah, a snake is snake. This video is nothing for him to be proud about. But still, the way he snakes this guy is amazing. He takes off slow and sort of pretends to aim at the guy, sorta hangs there distracting him, like "Hey! It's me! Kelly Slater!" then he makes kind of a half hearted attempt to avoid him--a mock courtesy moment, he's already got the guy sized up at this point, then Slater squirts in front of him at the last second, freezing the other guy just enough to discombobulate and causes a crash and burn. This really isn't a snake, it's a surgical extraction of a surfer from a wave.

He clearly saw the guy on the wave. He looked back and then continued on with no respect for the other surfer. He could have pulled out but didn't. He clearly pulled off a TOTAL ASS move by not respecting the other guy. There are people on this forum who talk about understanding the right of a surfer (meaning, if you are closer to the curl it's an unwritten rule and show of respect that it's your wave) but Kelly clearly rejects this rule and continues on the wave, cutting off the other surfer and making him fall. It is a bully move and should not be condoned just because he is a "pro surfer." If you don't respect everyone and their ability then you deserve no respect yourself.

Just because I do not personally promote localism out of Karmic concerns (which at base are selfish, life has just taught me you get away with nothing) I am a realist. The only pro surfer I have ever surfed with who is not a snake is TC, that's in part because he is so respected everybody just give him any wave he wants.

Are you joking? You are name calling someone on a video and you don't even know the person? ("longboard kook")

I think you are confusing "respect" with "fear". People usually give "better" surfers waves out of fear, not respect.

I am a realist too and believe that if we don't stand up to bullies then we are destined to keep getting our asses kicked by them. You can't change peoples' behaviors without confronting them and speaking out. It's not easy, it doesn't always work, but if you don't try you will never change anything.

I love surfing too much to just sit back and let others ruin it for me. I may not make a difference today but I will keep trying.

Was that guy a kook because he didnt ride a CI or because he wasnt doing 360's and busting airs? Maybe its because he didnt kick out immediatly when he realized the great one wanted that wave. Nausiating

I may yet eat my words from the localism thread. But this fascinating clip of the capo di capo, the lord of lords, aka Slater, exibits another version of localism, but instead of a localism based on geography, here it's based on ability. I'll call it "Abilityism". Face it, the guy on the longboard might be a kook, but Slater can make pro surfers look like kooks. Just some perspective on the subject at hand.
Slater is on the short list of greatest surfers ever, and may in fact headline it.

This is Darwinian surfing, the right of the higher over the lower. I've done it, there have been times (not many, but a few) where I was the best guy in the water, and yeah, I exploited that to my advantage. I've dominated weaker surfers. I've been in line ups where I was middle pack, and where I was the weak link, and my respective wave allotment was often based on what level of the pyramid I occupied on that given session. For me the bottom line is that the best surfers will usually be in the best position, paddle most aggressively, and get the most waves. What Slater did here, what Hawaiian have institutionalized, what I've done, and a million others as well, is bullshit. The rules of the road should be followed by all. It's the only method that's fair.

Beware the karma gods, they know who have been naughty or nice. Ever wonder where Slater's hair went?

One of the many reasons this is an great little video is the beginning, we see the capo di capo *running* down the beach to get in the water. After all these years, a chest high day at Rincon is all it took to fire him up.

kelly story...back in '92 when i was saddled up on Al's shapes, there was a buzz at the CI shop that kelly was coming by later that day for a signing. went home got the boys and wife and went back to sb and waited, waited and after closing Kelly, shane beschen, taylor knox and others returned from surfing big sur. so all of the dozen of us were there to get autographs with the kids ...who knew.

phenomena, amazing, the adjectives i don't have...wheter he's pool coping turns at bells, backside riding restaurants at tavarua, backdoor pipe, french beach breaks, j-bay in that final seconds of the final with andy...i'm speechless. the presence of mind he exhibits in contest or free surfing - no words. i'm envious in the sense that he just does it...i guess carpjaws is just a legend in his own mind?

I got snaked by TC at sandspit. He thought I wasn't coming out but i did, he was stoked was super cool about it. I don't mind sharing a wave with a pro. Including Slater. I see it more of a challenge to show them (not TC) what goes on when there not around.
