Latitude Gallery and Katie McLean would like to invite you to “California Calaveras—Celebrating the Skull Art of CA’s Unique Subcultures”—an exhibition inspired by the many unique subcultures in California and their diverse depictions of the skull.  California is home to a variety of vibrant subcultures: surf, skate, street, music, fashion, tattoo, lowrider, Western and Hispanic heritage.  All of these subcultures have created with their own individual aesthetic and all have used the skull in original ways.

Just in time for Halloween and Dia de Los Muertos, Latitude Gallery will be displaying portraits of California, it’s subcultures, and the single image of the skull in a variety of ways to create a melting pot of California Calaveras.  The exhibition will feature art, jewelry, clothes, and gifts by an array of artists of from different backgrounds.

The image of the skull is always memorable; whether it’s because we like to strip away what’s on the outside to reveal the basic structure of us all, or we are narcissicts drawn to the symmetrical self portrait of ourselves, or creeps obsessed with death and the bones that encase our insides.  Or, maybe it’s the skull’s representations of the time passed, forewarning, worship, or history that intrigues us.  But more often than not, the idea of the skull comes with the visuals created by California’s unique subcultures.

So, join us at Latitude Gallery to celebrate Halloween and Dia de Los Muertos with an exhibition of California Calaveras.  Dress in your best skull costume and come shake your booty to the haunting howls of Rumspringa’s psychedelic blues rock!  If you can’t make it, be sure to check out the exhibition weekends at Latitude Gallery Oct. 28 - Dec 4. 2011, and view the 8’ x 11’ mural featured on the show’s poster, created by Katie McLean, Aaron Ernst, and Marcos Carreno on display at Mason & State Street!
