NAPLES EVENTS

Monday, August 2 at Chaucer’s Bookstore at 7pm
Author Peter Heller and direct descendant of Nicolas Den, an original Naples landowner, will speak about his new book, Kook. This story documents his journey down the California and Mexico coast and his infatuation with learning to surf while treating a midlife crisis. In the book, Peter addresses the issue of saving undeveloped lands and of being good stewards of our environment. A percentage of the sales at this event will go to Naples Coalition. Chaucer’s is located at 3321 State St. in Loreto Plaza

Thursday, September 2 at Casa De la Guerra from 5 to 9pm ~ “NAPLES FANTASEA, Keep the Gaviota Coast Wild” Naples Coalition sponsors a First Thursday event with art by Rob Heeley and Dana Karpain, live music, a slide show of Naples and the Gaviota Coast and refreshments. Proceeds will go to Naples Coalition. Casa De la Guerra is located at 9 E. De la Guerra St across from De la Guerra Plaza. Creative attire is encouraged.

NAPLES NEWS UPDATE — July 2010

The Santa Barbara Ranch Project was approved by the Board of Supervisors over a year and a half ago, but is going nowhere fast.  The California Coastal Commission has not yet even considered the Project, and the status of the coastal zone approvals is more in question now than ever.  Meanwhile the lawsuit filed by the Naples Coalition, Surfrider and EDC against the County and the various owners of Santa Barbara and Dos Pueblos Ranches will soon become more active as we enter the briefing stage.

When the majority of Santa Barbara Ranch was foreclosed on this past spring, a new owner, First Bank (technically its holding company SBRHC, Inc.) came into the picture.  The Naples Coalition, Surfrider, and EDC received approval from Judge Anderle to amend the lawsuit to name SBRHC, Inc. as a party.  Adding SBRHC, Inc. to the suit was just one of many topics discussed at the Case Management Conference with Judge Anderle last week where attorneys for Naples Coalition, Surfrider, EDC, Santa Barbara County, SBRHC, Inc., the Dos Pueblos Ranch interests, and Santa Barbara Ranch interests, and Matt Osgood himself all sat down to plan out the next steps in the litigation.

Although SBRHC, Inc. now owns the majority of Santa Barbara Ranch, Matt Osgood still has six ‘grid’ lots that were not part of the foreclosure sale.  In May, Osgood proposed a home on one coastal grid lot and attempted to gain conceptual design approval from CBAR (Central Board of Architectural Review) without submitting a formal or complete application.  After the Naples Coalition and others voiced concern about the informal process and encouraged supporters to attend the CBAR hearing, Osgood dropped his request.  Naples Coalition attorneys will continue to monitor the County for any new development proposals for these grid lots.

Meanwhile, the Coastal Commission has yet to weigh in on the Santa Barbara Ranch Project and the Local Coastal Plan (LCP) amendment approved with the Project.  The Naples Coalition, Surfrider and EDC are prepared to file appeals with the Coastal Commission once the County and Coastal Commission Staff reach agreement on which permits are appealable.

Those that want to develop Naples remain years away from any of the necessary entitlements, and the Naples Coalition and its partners Surfrider Foundation and EDC are firmly committed to fighting these development proposals and securing permanent protection for Naples.  We’ll keep you posted on developments and alert you when it’s time to attend California Coastal Commission meetings or otherwise help to achieve our goals.  Thanks for your support.  Together we WILL Save Naples!!
