An Afternoon at The Point

A sick punt by an unidentified surfer at The Point Thursday evening…

The Queen Bathed in LIght

I’ve been hearing the whispers lately, those complaining about the anemia that has struck the Eastern Pacific this Winter as compared to the epic El NiƱo-fueled season we saw last year.  Well, for me personally, maybe it hasn’t hurt so much.  You see, I had major back surgery in mid-November, and my biggest fear lately has been that the surf would really turn on, and I’d be stuck at home or in physical therapy—unable to capitalize on all opportunities.  So far, the first half of the season (Nov./Dec.), I haven’t missed much.  In a selfish sort of way, I am thankful for that…  And then today happened.  My recovery from surgery has been a real test of my endurance.  For every two steps of progress forward that I make, there always seems to be a giant step backward.  A week ago I was all smiles, my back was feeling the best it has felt in years!  Then, early this week, all of a sudden a severe flare-up erupted, and today I spent the majority of my day laying on my trusty old heating pad…  On days like today, I check the buoy data every so often, and late this afternoon the swell heading kept creeping further and further West—right in our swell window.  Around 3:00 I could see that billowing rain clouds and brilliant sunlight were occurring contiguously with a very glassy sea surface.  Perfect light was imminent, and the surf was going to be head-high.  Well, this starving surf photographer hightailed it to The ‘Con (doh).  Below are a selection of random sample images.  Enjoy!
