“Abalone Reef”
The reason this spot is called Abalone Reef is because in the old days, during the Winter storms, there were so many Abalone shells that got churned up, that you almost couldn’t walk down the beach with out having to kick them out of your way! Many of us decorated our yards with abalone shells, used them for ashtrays, or made decorative mobiles to hang in the sun and watch all the brilliant colors in side of the shell change with the light. There were big red, green, orange and black ones. I remember many times coming back with a backpack filled with these Mother of Pearl gems. Then something happened and they haven’t been around for years, nowadays your lucky to find a whole one, usually just broken pieces.
This Winter, for some strange reason, the sand didn’t wash out and expose the rock shelf reef all the way down the beach as usual. Unlike other Winters I have seen, or can remember since 1967, the sand has built up about ten feet higher than this past Summer level, maybe we just need a few more huge NW swells to dig it out, or maybe it won’t go away. The good side of this, is it makes the 20 minute walk not so death-defying between the huge tide surges on the slippery and sharp rocks.
This slideshow was shot during a swell last Sunday and Monday. Monday the waves were the best with hollow tube sections and excellent shape. Some of the riders enjoying this swell included; Jimmy Martinez, Chris Hertler, Demi Boelsterli, Paul Woyack, Alan and a bunch of others.
I hope you enjoy this slide show and music.
Stay stoked,
