The 2012 Quiksilver Rincon Classic Presented By Channel Islands Surfboards

January 03, 2012 – Santa Barbara, CA – The winter surf is finally upon us and so the Rincon Classic has arrived. Surf permitting, Santa Barbara’s oldest and most revered surfing competition will return to Rincon Point for its 29th year on January 21st and 22nd, 2012.  The 2012 Quiksilver Rincon Classic, presented by Channel Islands Surfboards, produced by Surf Happens, brings the best local wave-riders together to celebrate the Santa Barbara surf, sand, and sea, and to compete for pride, division titles, loads of prizes, and custom drum and belt buckle trophies.

An all-ages pro-am event, the Classic features divisions ranging from the 11 & under “Gremlins,” to the 55+ “Legends,” and will run from 7:00am to 5:00pm both days. Live commentating, an ASP-certified judging panel, and computerized scoring displays courtesy of Beach Byte, provides onlookers and contestants with instant feedback on where each surfer stands in each heat. In addition, The Independent has joined us to dig up some historical surfer trivia for years past. These Classic Lines helps keep everyone entertained and well-informed while out on the beach.

Rincon Classic 2012 will also showcase crowd-favorite specialty events like the Locals Only Legacy, a revamped Red Bull Air Show in which competitors will be awarded points for each air they perform throughout the competition, a Professional Division, and the Expression Session in which Quiksilver and Channel Islands Surfboards have selected some of the best surfers in the world to exhibit championship surfing in our own back yard. But this isn’t merely a surf competition. On the beach, special events include the ability for onlookers to:

Demo the latest-and-greatest wetsuits by Roxy and Quiksilver

Take a test-ride of state-of-the-art surfboards and skateboards by local and world-class designers like Al Merrick/Channel Islands Surfboards, Jason Feist/J7, & Matt Moore/Rincon Designs.

Refresh with a Food and Water station outfitted by Wahoo Fish Tacos, Mad Dogs, Pacific Coast Café, Red Bull, Frooty Acai, and Caribbean Coffee.

Watch as the competitors get loosened up in the Competitors Area courtesy of Alki Wellness center. Join them and be supplied by Marc and Karen Grandle with on site chiropractic and massage care for competitors and spectators alike for both days of the event.

After the contest, SIMA is hosting the 2012 “Classic Sunday” Awards Ceremony and Live & Silent Auction Fundraiser at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum. Fully catered by Wahoo Fish Tacos, attendees can see this year’s contest winners, view highlights of the entire event, bid on prizes and help raise money for charity while enjoying live music and delicious food.  The event runs 6:30-10:00pm on the closing day of the event.

Select entries are still available at http://www.rinconclassic.com, but most divisions are full with alternates being taken on first come first serve basis. Entry fees run $75 for regular division entry, $150 for the pro division, and $50 for second division fees. All competitors receive an official 2012 Quiksilver Rincon Classic Quiksilver or Roxy hat, Teva shoes, lunch each day, free entry into the SIMA Classic Sunday awards ceremony, raffle tickets, and more.  Please note you must be a Santa Barbara (805) resident. Entries are taken from the core community (Santa Barbara, Carpinteria, Goleta, then Ventura) and if there are openings spread out to the surrounding 805.

Missed some of the action? Never fear. We have teamed up with Jon Shafer and Santa Barbara Surfer who will be documenting and shooting the event for your viewing pleasure either online at santabarbarasurfer.com or at the SIMA Classic Sunday awards ceremony. Also look for images from top local lensman Glen Dubock, Brandon Aroyan, and Seth De Roulet. If you can’t be at the event watch the video clips!  Josh Pomer and Post Modern Surfer are creating daily highlight packages, and heats-on-demand for all finals, available online at rinconclassic.com for the 3rd straight year.

While we’re all out on the beach, it’s important to remember to reduce our carbon footprint as much as possible to keep Rincon Point (The Queen) as Green as possible for years to come. This is why we have teamed up with Green Project Consultants and made an effort to neutralize any environmental impact our days on the shore will have. Stay Green by carpooling or riding a bike to the contest, bringing a re-usable mug, and participate in one of our event beach clean-ups (Saturday 12pm, Sunday 12pm, 3pm).

Head over to www.rinconclassic.com  to find more information on sponsors, the events, to sign-up, and see all the goodees competitors receive. Don’t forget to enter an incredible gear-raffle worth over $10,000 in brand-name goods. Raffle proceeds go towards funding free surf camps for youth, and young adult cancer survivors, sharing the healing powers of the ocean with those in need through our charitable partners, The Surf Happens Foundation, and First Descents.

SUPER PIC OF “VANE VEYNOLDS”.  Is that for real…is it Dane Reynolds?

Do they publish or notify people if they made it into the contest? I applied but have no clue if I am in the contest or not. I’d think they’d publish a list so you knew what’s what.

The schedule of events, heat draw, and whether the event
is a go for the coming weekend will be posted at 7pm
tonight on rinconclassic.com.

If you are from outside of the 805, you were not registered in the
event and a refund will be issued today. An automated email was
sent to all of those participants with a valid email. All registrations from
within the 805 are prioritized by proximity to Rincon starting with Carpinteria,
Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Goleta.

Log on to rinconclassic.com for a complete list of rules.

So if I show-up on the beach with my $$ and live in Santa Barbara but the division is full including guys from Ventura-South they will be refunded to make room for me correct?
P.S. Looks like the call not to hold-it this weekend was a mistake…

The contest was not delayed. It was not ever scheduled. Its called a waiting period. It will be scheduled when conditions permit.

To Wes,

If you didn’t sign up for the event, you may register
on the beach to be an alternate, or fill a spot if
there are openings in your division. The deal is
that every year the event is filled with local alternates
standing by. This year is no exception. If you have
yet to register and show up on the beach, you will
not receive priority over the other locals pre-registered
in the event.

The heat draws are made up of predominantly Carp,
and Santa Barbara surfers with some Ventura, and Goleta
as well, with a very small minority of surfers from the outer
805 in select divisions based on availability.

Suggestion. You want in, sign up during the waiting period.
That way you and all other area residents are guaranteed
entry.
