Day 2 Wrap-Up
When I showed up on Sunday morning down at the final day of The 2010 Rincon Classic everyone was psyching to get things started. The surf had increased slightly and had lost the bumpy surface that threw off all but the most adaptable competitors in the early rounds. In fact, it at one point it was looking so rippable that both myself and fellow commentator Dennis Rizzo were seriously considering abandoning our post.
The Gremlins were especially out of their minds with excitement as this year was really special for them. There was a lot more on the line than just winning a trophy because Jason Feist and the boys over at J7 Surfboards were giving the winner a brand new stick, as well as a year-long sponsorship deal which included advertising spots and private coaching from the elite members of the J7 Surf Team. When the smoke cleared little Mickey Clarke had slammed the door shut on his fellow Gremlins claiming the trophy and the loot.
Spencer Regan was ripping the bag out of anything that came his way all event and easily ousted all of his opposition in the Men’s short board taking home the first place prize and establishing himself as the new man to beat in that division. This really came as no suprise to anyone that who has surfed Rincon lately as Spencer has been seen lighting it up on more than one occasion even garnishing some respect from visiting Pro’s.
Charlie Fawcett took down both the Jr.s and Boys brackets in a solid display of surfing and stamped his mark on the event joining a very elite group of surfers to win in multiple divisions.
The most exciting heat of the day had to be the Women’s short board where Demi Boelsterli threw down perfect tens against friend and local ripper Lakey Petersen to take home the victory. Having Lakey in a heat usually puts fear in the hearts of her opponents but Demi proved she was up to the task laying down huge hacks on both of her counting waves. Lakey fired back at the end of the heat with a couple of World Class slashes on the inside race track but came up just short on her 2nd scoring ride finishing runner up. both of these girls had the crowd on their feet cheering and showed that The Classic isn’t just a boys show anymore.
Daniel Graham dominated the Mens Longboard division with a nice blend of modern and classic styles as Cole Robbins slid in to a fairly easy 2nd.
Bobby Goodman cleaned up Alexis Usher and the rest of the Masters while the old Carps surfed well too, as Kit Cossart was also on fire in both Grand Masters and Legends taking a first and a second respectively.
Adam Lambert took down the Expression Session in memory of the late Brandon Yates, with a last minute flurry easing the pain from coming up just short of making the Pro Final.
In the Grand Masters division, it was Tony De Groot followed by Kit Cossart and Steve Hansen. Reports Tony, “I had pneumonia six weeks before the classic and even up to an hour before my heat I wasn’t sure if I was going to the medcenter or the classic. I did compete and was stoked that I hadn’t lost too much…” Congratulations to Tony who displayed strong character in his impressive victory…
The last heat of the day was the one everyone was waiting for but excitement would be short lived as Kilian Garland proved why he was the defending champion early on and basically destroyed the opposition. Tyler Anderson made a late push in the end to secure a hard fought second over Spencer Regan who boosted a huge Air Reverse in the late stages of the final but couldn’t quite find a solid back up score to push him ahead.
All of the competitors in the contest surfed great in the various conditions, adapting and making the most of 2 completely different days. With all the anticipation due to cancellations, and all of the second guessing on if this weekend was a good call or not, it was good to see The Queen and Mother nature join forces to bless us all with an epic and beautiful weekend of fun and great surf.

Epilogue: Chris Keet, Contest Director
“The Winter of 2009-2010 will go down in history as one of the most consistent and appealing seasons in recent memory. The El Nino driven storms served up seemingly swell after swell every few days from October through February. With those swells came rain, and lots of it, with a pattern of mid week and weekend arrivals. That combined with everything from high winds, a tsunami warning, caused the 2010 Surf Happens Rincon Classic to be postponed four times before the Queen stopped playing hard to get.
Held on Saturday and Sunday March 13 & 14 under sunny skies with temperatures in the high seventies, the glassy head high peelers combined with a high caliber of surfing and truly accentuated the Queen’s royal lineage. From the Gremlins 11 and under all the way to the Budlight Professional division the event was action packed.”

Greetings from Montreal, Canada, where it’s -15 degrees C! Great to see my that my old friends Danny Bralver and Tony De Groot are still out there ripping! Hey, Dan, great fun back in the early 80’s hangin’ out with you and Steve Woods at the Sojourner Cafe in Santa Barbara. And that crazy trip we took down to Baja, Mexico in Nellybelle. Tony, hey dude, I still remember those fencing sessions with the old Russian coach Berger back in the day. I just sent my sister Victoria a message that I saw your name here. She’s a hot yoga teacher in Vancouver now
