Be Green to the Queen: Surf Happens Rincon Classic Presented by SIMA

27th annual event rescheduled to Saturday and Sunday March 13th & 14th

Santa Barbara, CA - March 10, 2010…  Santa Barbara county’s oldest and most revered surfing competition returns to the fabled cobblestone’s of Rincon Point on Saturday and Sunday March 13th and 14th for the Surf Happens Rincon Classic presented by SIMA.  After four postponements due to rain, wind, and even a tsunami warning,  the weather predictions of high 60’s to low 70’s with sunny skies combining with a decent swell, event organizers, contestants, and spectators alike will be frothing.

The surfing competition is an all ages event consisting of seventeen divisions from the 11 & under Gremlins, to the 55+ Legends division and will run from 6:45am to 5:30pm both days.  In addition to the regular divisions, for the fifth year running the 10 Rincon Classic features the specialty division favorites, the Airshow/ Expression Session, and the Budlight Professional “Budlight Pro” Division, with the new addition of the Jarritos “Hack Off The Top” award for the best turn per division.  Entry fees are $75 for regular divisions, and $150 for the Budlight Pro division. Entries are available to Santa Barbara county (805) residents only.

“Be Green To The Queen”

Change begins with one.  The credo for the 2010 Rincon Classic, “Be Green To The Queen”, honors the environmental efforts of Surf Happens, event sponsors, and the local community, in spreading the awareness of problems stemming from the over consumption of plastics, and the removal of all single use items from the event.  Through the support from Caribbean Coffee Company, the Surfrider Foundation, and the Quiksilver Foundation all contestants will receive a drink tin, re-usable jute bag, and organic t-shirt with their entry fee.

In addition, participating event sponsors removed plastic packaging prior to shipping donated products, with several sponsors working to alter the way that they offer products to help support the cause.  For example, Sexwax provided wax for all contestants without a wrapper or in their new re-usable packaging, while Caribbean Coffee traded in their plastic and metal packaging for bags made of recycled compostable materials.  All waste created through the event will be recycled and managed by Green Project Consultants.

To further the goal of spreading awareness, we have teamed up with environmental groups, Surfrider Foundation, Ocean Future’s Society, Naples Coalition, Surfers without Borders, and others to showcase programs to contestants and spectators.  Event trophies are hand made pots with the Rincon Classic Logo branded into them created by the Happy Green Merchant.  Each pot contains a palm tree potted into it.  The symbolism is that like these trees we are all rooted into the earth, and need clean water to grow towards the sky.

“You’re in the Movie”

If you can’t make it down to the event, watch from the comfort of your own home for the second year!  Both days feature a time lapse webcast broadcasted courtesy of SantaBarbaraSurfer.com and PostModernSurfer.com.  The webcast will feature heats on demand posted every few hours on rinconclassic.com, santabarbarasurfer.com and postmodernsurfer.com.  If you surf in the event, you will be in the webcast, and You Are in The Movie.  Each heat will be professionally filmed and photographed with the movie and images for sale.  A portion of proceeds will be donated to local children afflicted by cancer through Hugs for Cubs.

“Classic Sunday” Awards Ceremony

The Rincon Classic event will once again be a “green” event with the goal of improving upon last years’ success to defer 90% + of all waste from areas landfills.  Special fundraising events include “You’re in the Movie” sales with a portion of proceeds going to Hugs For Cubs, and the Wahoo’s Classic Sunday awards ceremony on Sunday March 14 @ the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum from 7:00-10:00pm.  The awards ceremony is free to contestants and open to the public for a $10 fee and includes dinner, live music by Free Culture Artists, live and silent auction, raffle, slide show of images, video highlights from the event, awards presentation, environmental booths, and the world premier of the Surf Happens reduction movie, The Plastic Experiment. Proceeds benefit the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, and The Surf Happens Foundation.
