Outlook For Next Winter Improves as SST Charts Suggest Return of El Niño

    The Winter of 2009-2010 was a banner year for local breaks, and was powered by the phenomenon known as “El Niño”.  By most accounts, however, the past two surfing seasons have been described sub-par at best (if not downright awful), due mostly to persistent unusually cold water in the Tropical Pacific.  El Niño is described a disruption of the ocean-atmosphere system in the Tropical Pacific having important consequences for weather and climate around the globe, and is characterized by unusually warm temperatures in the equatorial Pacific. Scientists of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have declared that ENSO-neutral (i.e., “normal”) conditions have returned this Spring, and are predicting an equal chance that a full-blown El Niño event will return by Winter — great news for surfers.  Whether or not El Niño fully materializes, one thing is certain:  better surf than what we have experienced the past two seasons is in our foreseeable future!
