Walking to the beach on Sunday I wasn’t sure what to expect. The weather forcast had a storm approaching and Surfline had forcasted a swell to show the day before. What we saw as we walked across the beach made me a happy man. Waves. Beautiful waves with groomed off-shore winds. The only problem was it was cold… really cold… But when a surfer sees waves like that, nothing else matters. The waves were well overhead glassy peaks and the kids frothed to get out there like kids rushing to open presents on Xmas morning.
All day long the waves stayed good. The high tide in the morning made for some wild shorebreak moments and in the afternoon the long waves offered up waves that would make a judge wish he was surfing… Great performances were put in by many kids. Vinny Leonelli was turning heads all day as was Tavis Bosie. Jason Knell made his first final by winning all his heats to be the only freshman in the final. So many competitors got great rides. Sunday was a really great day to be a surfer and the best day to have to do a make-up event after the first event was over. At the beginning of the year Tavis Bosie told me that he just wanted to win an event. Well he earned the win by surfing really well all day… In the Womens divisions Isabelle Radis showed she felt comfortable in the surf and took the win.
Due to the waves being so good, many kids surfed themselves silly and by the finals conditioning took its toll. I want to say thanks to everyone that was a part of a great event and hope that everybody had as much fun as I did…
