Steve Bissell’s “Field of Dreams”

This is a time for thanks, and I’d like to express mine. I’m a very lucky guy. Most people don’t realize how good they got it till it’s gone or they’re gone. So, I created a little beautiful, moody thing dedicated to California, and Santa Barbara in particular and all of the cross-eyed crazies that call her home. This little show spans more than forty years, the pics are real and so are the intense feelings that inspired them. Your not gonna SEE radical moves and bust out airs…but you will FEEL the soul of surfing in Santa Barbara…it’s backlit colors and it’s clean lines. These are the things that linger in the mind, long after the shock value of the latest super magneto ant-gravity gonad twister becomes passé. I have to give special thanks to god and nature for Santa Barbara’s greatest single gift…Rincon Del Mar…

”Long live the Queen!”

A Master Blaster glimpse into the width and depth of a lifestyle that only a few understand, truly. The places and shades of our beloved home, as seen through the eye of the artist…..Steve-O. Truly inspirational, introspective and inspiring. Steve once again raises the bar, his eyebrow and instills a twinkle in all our eyes. Thanks for being you, my friend.

Steve, you are the Master at capturing the beauty of the ocean as well as life! Ever since we got a glimpse of your Panama slide show back in the 70’s, I’m hooked! Whenever I listen to Santana, those images come to mind! Please keep them coming, love you Steve Bissell!

Steve, and all.
Each shot is prime.  Sublime.  But the 5th bonus is beyond things natural and touches the supernatural.  Thanks, as I needed another gode in the rib to bring
chuckles of the teen and pre-teen core back to my inner self.  Those are old friends toward the horizon, stroking
stoaking, and pulling for the green on the outside while
they glance shoreward to see their comrad’s trail.

My dads passion for photography is amazing, He’ll go to any length to capture the greatest shot. I’m glad that in a way I contributed to his amazing work by carrying his equipment for him sometimes. Rock on Dad, being a BIG music fan myself I must say great choice of song.

» wrote on 11.23.11 @ 06:26 PM

I met Steve at Brooks, and thought that he was an idiot savant then, and still do! Great work.

Wow! Brings back fond memories and emotions!
Touches my inner soul. Kind of makes me
    teary eyed.

» wrote on 11.24.11 @ 03:34 PM

Im stoked Steve has been bringing his lunacy to our eyes for as long as I can remember, Im almost cross eyed from this one!

» wrote on 11.24.11 @ 09:51 PM

Is this guy for real?

» wrote on 11.24.11 @ 11:57 PM

I think how wild it must look to the guy on the board….then you see shots like this

makes you wish you have zoom lens eyes
I like the pipeline shots
it used to fascinate me when I was a kid….but not so into cold water sharks (NW)
Great Job!

» wrote on 11.25.11 @ 12:59 AM

Steve, those are some of the best photos I have ever seen of the surf in Santa B…. I would love to get some prints from you! Tell Rio and John I said hi!

» wrote on 11.25.11 @ 09:17 AM

Steve-O….. Otro homerun !!  Way out there !!
  Thank you…. tu hermano rupert

» wrote on 11.25.11 @ 09:54 AM

Stevo, thanks for the journey. The first shot of the point reminds me of a painting i had made while stationed in Korea in 1973. I had a copy of Surfer Mag and I tore out a picture and had a painting made of that break. It still hangs in my living room.
Stay crazy man.

» wrote on 11.25.11 @ 03:18 PM

I too, went to Brooks, Class of ‘69, and I remember Steve as being very eccentric. I always wondered how he did, now I see.

» wrote on 11.25.11 @ 06:08 PM

I surfed in Panama back in the 50’s and always wondered what that skinny little kid with the camera was doing, now I know. Seems like he learned how to use it well. I guess its a good thing I didnt pound him back then!

» wrote on 11.25.11 @ 09:25 PM

Big Daddy does it again.  You are the water planets number one documenter.  Stay sharp my fiend.  Come and visit me boy!

» wrote on 11.25.11 @ 09:51 PM

Special and special. An artist at work like no other. Your work is honoring the “Queen” but you are the “King” in the relationship. keep them rolling for us servants

» wrote on 11.26.11 @ 12:23 AM

I met Steve at Brooks also, and I could tell he was going to do great things, he had that eye of the tiger look in his eyes. I sell insurance in Hoboken and make a lot of money, BUT I live in Hoboken and sell insurance. Havent picked up a camera in 30 years. Keep that eye Steve. Geeze I miss SB.

» wrote on 11.26.11 @ 10:08 AM

Stevo, its so so great to watch your amazing slide shows again.I truly missed them and want to see them all on the big screen. Please make that happen! I also feel blessed to be part of your family and witness first hand your unmatched talent. Whats next?, your other son.

» wrote on 11.26.11 @ 09:49 PM

You knew how and why you were shooting back in the early 70’s and it hasn’t changed. Some people simply push a camera button, you always knew how to roll it smoothly, to get the best image. I left SB…Thank God you stayed to record the Point.

Steve, This is yet another All Inspiring Experience…THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Is it ever too late to become something you’ve not been yet??  You’ve inspired me to become a Surfer, a Traveler, Learn how to use that camera my Dad gave me and be a photographer, go to film school, do something for the Earth, move to Panama, forget the Rat Race, jump in my car, put the top down, get on PCH!!  All from your beautiful art….Love, Ronda Call (Stabler)

Mi hermano…such inimitable style.
You pull my heartstrings once again.
I remember
Running down that beach with single fin in hand
The blazing sunset at Tarantula..surviving triple overhead.
Boy, my legs were skinny and hair long back then, eh?
Not only did you capture my interest
You captured my soul!

Suave.

» wrote on 12.03.11 @ 11:15 PM

Steve, you look fantastic cutting across the Rincon swells. I am so glad we had the pleasure to become friends when you were 10 years old and you wanted a ride to Rincon, Hammonds, and Miramar. John Eichert and I would pick you up at John’s house and off we would go in what ever surfing car I owned at the time. You were a free spirit that loved being in the salt water. Well your adventure continues…...........PS: Happy BDay
