These are the junk cars that the Bixby Ranch used to block surfers who were driving on the beach from the Hollister Ranch. The person in the car is my wife, Kathryn Waters Stevens. I asked her to make a left turn for the photo. This was taken in 1961.Before moving to Santa Barbara, she was an accomplished young female surfer from Manhattan Beach. She won some local surf contests in her youth.

HI Tucker:
I’m photo editing a book, ‘Cold Water Souls’ - a celebration of those pioneering spirits who have taken on surfing’s final frontiers from Nova Scotia and Vancouver Island to Hokkaido, Japan and Iceland.
I’m just tracking down some classic images of Rincon and Hollister Ranch and saw this fantastic shot. I hoped you may be interested in contributing it to the book…
