Surf Happens’ Chris Keet Tells the Story

“When I was in Junior High my friends began developing a scale to gauge the difference between what I saw and reported on wave size, and their reality. Basically, I have always been amped up which translated to what some may call an exageration of reality. The theory was divide by 2 and add 1.75 for anything i say. 12 feet then becomes 7.5. I would call the waves at the ISF last weekend 5 to 8 foot on the sets which is applying that theory.

Members of the local middle schools teams at Santa Barbara Junior High, and Crane school overcame fears of the substantial surf, the pack of cantankerous locals, and the extreme southerly current to score half mile rides, runs up the beach, and pretty much an all Santa Barbara affair in the finals. Santa Barbara Junior High School came out with the victory for the day with great performances put on by Tucker Ingalls, Foster Campbell, and Dryden Brown, among others.

The story of the day was of rising local talent Jason Knell from Crane claiming his maiden victory in the event, just ousting event favorite Landon Mccomb. Throughout the course of the event Knell was picking off the set waves, and winning heats with only one wave per heat. Our strategy heading into the final was simple. Get two solid waves and you will win. Knell caught a nice overhead double up in the opening minutes pulling off smooth, powerful top turns. After battling the current for the ensuing eight minutes, he caught a second scoring ride in the final two minutes that put him out in front. He was also a finalist in the Longboard division.

Bodyboarding from Crane was Christopher who placed 2nd in his first ever surfing contest! Way to go Chris. The respect and comraderie of the area teams as individual teams and as a community was one of the highlights with an enormous amount of support for one another. Surfers stayed all day to support fellow riders, and faced fears, surfed in multiple divisions, and challenged themselves all in the name of teamwork and sportsmanship. Kudos to all of the kids and an amazing day of surfing.”
